Reader Melissa Arras Allen of Waco, Texas, recently wrote Atomic Ranch to finally find out if the beautiful sofa she had just reupholstered was from Steelcase or from coveted designer Florence Knoll. She sent us the photos and we turned the question over to our furniture experts, Julian and Desiree Goldklang of Mid Century Møbler, for the answer!
First, Florence Knoll designed for Knoll Associates and Knoll International while Steelcase was a separate company out of Michigan. Based on these images, I would suggest this piece was manufactured by Steelcase or another furniture manufacturer active during the 1960s. Knoll popularized this look and countless manufactures copied this silhouette.
There are some identifiers your reader might be able to use. Usually, Knoll sofas came with a solid steel frame (not hollow), solid oak interior underneath the upholstery, attached back cushions, and was usually upholstered in a color palette of neutrals and occasionally red. The photo of the original upholstery appears green.
