And how do you choose plants for your climate zone? We put these questions to Jim Drzewiecki of Ginkgo Leaf Studio for a professional opinion.
It’s that time of year when we can start planning for warmer months! If you’re considering overhauling your yard this summer, get some advice from the pros first. A landscape design studio based in Wisconsin, Ginkgo Leaf Studio has experience designing for climates outside of the stereotypical desert/semi-arid climates that dominate images of MCM landscape. Jim Drzewiecki, principal at Ginkgo Leaf Studio, knows about modern landscaping outside the stereotypical succulents and palm trees. Find Jim’s expert advice about factors to consider in MCM landscaping.
Atomic Ranch: What makes modern landscaping modern?
Jim Drzewiecki: Simple, clean geometry that is translated into the hardscape shapes and plant beds. For the actual plantings we generally work with a simplified palette of plants, either less variety in the plants themselves and/or less range of color for the perennials. Plantings that focus on foliage texture or massed plantings are other examples. For hardscaping, we’ll consider less fussy materials, focusing on simple stone or concrete vs brick or paving with a lot of pattern. Stone mulch may come into play vs. wood mulch, at least in highlighted areas.
AR: In the Exteriors issue, you’re quoted saying “In any MCM-based landscape design, I think the coordination between hardscaping and plant beds is more important than in a typical suburban landscape. If your home has dominant lines or architectural features such as a chimney, let those guide you in laying out your hardscapes and/or planting beds.” Could you give a few examples of how hardscaping and architectural features can complement each other?
JD: Having a degree in architecture is helpful when looking at a home to identify the dominant architectural features. In design, it can be as simple as centering features in the landscape on major doors or windows. Other architectural elements we look for are angled or curved house walls, roof shapes/overhangs and chimneys or wing walls. We also look for unique windows or stone/brick details built into the home’s façade. Even the corners or wall edges of the home can help define where paving or bedlines end.
AR: You also say, “Please don’t try to make your Minnesota or Texas MCM look as if it’s in Palm Springs!” How would someone who isn’t a landscape professional get to know what’s native to the area and how they might suit a modern landscape?
JD: For homeowners unsure about what plants are native and/or hardy, start with a reputable local garden center. You can also try the local college extension or garden groups. Touring a local botanical garden can also give you some insight into what plants thrive in your area.
AR: When/why do you recommend bringing in a landscape professional?
JD: When to hire a landscape professional is easy – before you begin! A good landscape designer is trained in laying out outdoor spaces and understands the use of various materials and construction techniques. They should also have a good idea about what those features cost. When it comes to plants, years of experience will inform a designer on what plants are best for your area and your specific site conditions. So many factors go into choosing the right plants. A landscape designer starts with defining structure and balance on the plantings, using the height and shape of plants. Then we look at foliage color and texture and the color of the flowers. Bloom time and seasonal interest will also play a role in plant selection.
