The 10th home in the landmark Desert Eichler homes by Kud Properties is almost complete and it’s for sale! That makes this a good time to revisit the monumental project launched by Kud Properties founder Troy Kudlac in 2014 that brought Eichler floor plans to the Palm Springs area. Check out this video below where Atomic Ranch gets an exclusive preview of the latest build to see what makes this different from the rest, hear from Troy about what they’ve done to update Eichler’s designs for today and learn how you can get your hands on this one or have one custom made for you.

If you’ve been following Atomic Ranch for a while, then you know them well and if you haven’t well keep watching because you’re going to be blown away just like we were when we first saw them. I am talking about the Desert Eichlers, which is a visionary project by Kud Properties that revives Eichler floor plans and brings them here to the desert for the first time in the Palm Springs area
In 2014 Troy Kudlac founder of Kud Properties worked out an agreement to use various authentic Eichler floor plans and by 2015 built the first one a Claude Oakland design A-frame model right on the Boger Trail in South Palm Springs. Eight years later and there are nine desert Eichlers that stand as a testament not only to the Eichler homes but also Kud Properties ability to modernize them in a way that preserves their modernist tradition but updates them for today’s lifestyle
Troy: Yeah, we get asked a lot about the plans and do we build them exactly the way that they were designed and the answer is yes our intent is to build them exactly the way they were designed. We do, there’s some things we have to change a lot of times we’re making the bedrooms now a little bit bigger just because that’s what people are asking for and like in the same idea if I put my Joseph Eichler glasses on like I say frequently you know I look through his lenses I’m trying to meet my clients need and what they’re looking for.
Jickie: So, Troy this is the 10th house in the desert Eichler Series right and it’s a brand-new floor plan?
Troy: That’s correct the new one we haven’t uh built yet it’s the sv54 model designed by Claude Oakland. Mostly I believe they built them in SV stands for Sunnyvale um so back in the 60s Eichler was building these in the Sunnyvale area so.
Jickie: What I love about these homes that obviously you’re not 100% finished yet but even without any furniture or anything installed there’s house still sparkles because you’ve got some really great dynamic textures and materials going on
Troy: The fun thing about the Eichler homes is we get to be creative, and you know introduce different color schemes, different materials, different textures. We like to throw in some walnut wood paneling always that richens up the space. All the homes have the pine on the ceilings and mixing it with some Kerf Cabinetry is is always been great you know. I work alongside with Amy my wife and we love being creative and working with different colors and schemes and textures like this this green color of the fireplace is the uh is an original color from the Phillips house.
Jickie: So what is it like to sort of continue in the shoes of Joseph Eichler building these in here in the desert?
Troy: It’s it’s a tough question but I I like it. It’s um, I definitely feel humbled and blessed and honored to be doing what we’ve been doing, and I think it’s just been cool to be able to just continue his legacy and just get more people can experience this great architecture that he was involved with.
Jickie: Now this is number 10 which probably, even to me, feels monumental in a lot of ways. What is it for you?
Troy: It’s pretty cool! Like it’s awesome and humbling that we’ve, you know, been able to build 10 of them. It’s been such a fun ride such a fun process this number 10 is special because it’s; I’m excited about the front-loaded atrium. I’m excited about the floor plan here, we haven’t done this one, the roofline, with this angled roof line. This is the first house we’ve done in Palm Desert which is my family’s hometown, and we love Palm Desert and Palm Desert has a ton of mid-century modern homes that people are just now starting to find out about and so I’m really excited to unveil this one in Palm Desert.
Jickie: And I’ve heard that there’s a few more Desert Eichlers underway. Is that true?
Troy: That is true there, there are a few more underway. We have two more under construction actually right now so 11 and 12 are under construction they’re in Indian Wells. And so, what we can do for people is uh both of those were for clients and those clients have come directly to us and said hey we’ve seen your desert Eichlers, they’re amazing we want one and I’m like I don’t have one. I wish I had one for you, but we can help you build one. So, we we’ve been able to help them acquire the land, design the desert Eichler exactly the way they want it. Make it a little bigger a little or smaller, change the ceiling sizes add some outdoor pavilions and some fun funky things and and be creative and so they’re uh they’re both about halfway done right now and so if anyone else is interested in something like that we can, they can contact us look us up on our website and we would love to work with you.
Jickie: So, as you can see things are just about wrapping up here at Desert Eichler 10 and guess what: it’s just about to be for sale! So, you can own yourself a piece of new Mid Century Modern history and get yourself a desert eye clear here in Palm Desert. Just get in touch with Troy and his team at kudproperties.com.
