A combination of European inspiration and the image of Palm Springs helped to create the sleek Austin, Texas hideaway—the Kimber Modern. Kimber Cavendish, the hotel’s owner, had a vision in her head of a small hotel “where like minded people would meet and create lasting moments together.”
The History
After traveling through Europe and becoming enamored with the boutique hotels, Cavendish was motivated to create a hotel with the same timeless design that was modern, simple, and inviting. However, something in her plan was missing. In 2005, she took a trip to Palm Springs and this is where she found her final piece of the puzzle. She rode her bike around the town and took note of the design elements in the different hotels. With these travels in mind, Cavendish created a hotel in Austin, Texas that has attracted people from all over the world who are interested in modern design and want to dwell in a creative space.
The Design
The whole idea behind the Kimber Modern’s décor comes from Cavendish’s journey through a minimalist lifestyle. When Cavendish was 9, her father built their family a new home and her mom picked out all of the furniture for the house in a Midcentury modern furniture store in San Francisco. Her mom sparked her passion for modern design and “at 82, she continues to be my inspiration to this day,” she says.
Like most designers, Cavendish claims that her environment heavily affects her emotionally. When she is surrounded by sleek and modern design, she feels more at ease. This is the feeling she wanted to give to her guests. When it came to setting up her hotel, she was very attentive to the balance of the design and the architecture. She strongly believes that less is more. Cavendish advises on keeping it simple and saving up for that authentic piece of furniture. “Don’t compromise on perfection and continue to be a reductionist,” she says. Lastly, take advantage of the natural light and bring nature inside.
The Experience
Live lavishly in your own midcentury home. The Kimber Modern offers a residential experience with everything you can get from a hotel. Cavendish has heard from guests that it’s “like staying in your richest best friend’s home just a block from the hippest city in Texas.” A lot of the Kimber Modern experience comes from its blend of nature and architecture. Large oak trees and greenery runs through the hotel to create an oasis in the city. You can enjoy a glass of wine on the outdoor porches or sleep off your busy day in Austin in a luxury bed. Check out of your stressful daily life and check in to the Kimber Modern.
