A new-build house unites building with background in Mid Century Modern style.
Even though this Rockford, Michigan, home was built in 2013, it has the spirit of a mid-century ranch-style house. “The architecture is by Chad Gould Architect LLC, with interior (and exterior) design by Rock Kauffman Design,” says Scott Branc, president of New Urban Home. “Our clients wanted to build a new home in a Mid Century Modern style and approached New Urban because we are regionally known as a builder/renovator of Mid Century Modern style homes. We helped them assemble a design team that worked particularly well with mid-century aesthetics.”
It was important to the design team to stay true to the mid-century style and they drew inspiration from the beautiful evergreen scenery surrounding the property. “We put a concentrated effort into choosing design elements that worked not only to blend the home into its environment but to facilitate interaction between ‘inside’ and ‘outside’ so that people inside the home feel connected to the nature surrounding it,” Scott explains. “A large window next to the front door and several above it allow natural light to illuminate the front entry. We also utilized beams through the roofline and warm cedar accents on the exterior.”
Leading the Landscape
The garden’s design emphasizes clean leading lines that issue the guest into the home. “Where there are visual ‘pops,’ like the retaining wall and evergreen trees, they serve a point to direct your gaze toward the door in an inviting way, Scott says. These elements work in concert with the pop of bright red at the front door.”
Naturally Noteworthy
The prevalent use of warm wood and the dramatic red door amid the neutral color palette turn heads. “I love the natural cedar elements integrated into the front of the home,” Scott says. While the house harmoniously blends with the landscape, it’s by no means easy to overlook. The clean lines and warm cedar accents demand attention from passersby.
“It’s important to differentiate your home from those surrounding it,” Scott says. “You want a home to stand out in a good way.” The attention to detail in color, landscape and design has allowed this mid-century Michigan home to do just that.
