Bali meets Cali in This Tropical and Relaxing Backyard Design

Slip into the Soothing Waters

Tiled with Hisbalit mosaic glass from Spain, the walls of the pool shimmer and glow with any light source. Falling Waters Landscape chose small, jewel-like tiles from a local tile shop for the project. “I like smaller tiles as they are more forgiving on transitions from vertical to horizontal,” Ryan says. Water flows into the spa from the custom scuppers on the wall. The drains are powder-coated aluminum, designed to create interest and movement in the water.

Lounging into the Evening

With plenty of room to stretch out in this backyard sanctuary, the courtyard is as great for entertaining as it is for some tranquil alone time. Custom-made anti-microbial foam cushions decorate the simple yet beautiful bench. The firepit, candles and warm tones of the pool’s interior work together to create a calming glow. To Ryan, the color green is synonymous with South Asia. “The goal was to have the water look like a dipping pool you would find in the jungle,” Ryan says. Greens, blues, and gold create a verdant and tropical vibe indicative of the South Asian area.

Secluded Backyard Sanctuary

The pool courtyard reminds the clients of their years spent in Thailand and Bali. Bold, large-leaf plant varieties, palms, and bird of paradise surround the pool courtyard. Taking cues from the cedar on the house already, Falling Waters Landscape used Western Red Cedar for the vertical walls. To create a focal piece, Ryan angled the cedar in two directions. “During the design process I was playing with angles and this one spoke to me,” Ryan says. Thermory Ash wood was used for the decking.

While the firepit in the Falling Waters Landscape design is custom-made, Lowes has plenty of options to warm up your backyard design. While you’re there, pick up some Australian-native plants. They feel lush and verdant but don’t need a lot of water.
