The Four Seasons Restaurant – New York City, New York
The Four Seasons has always been the real deal, an authentic representation of Mid Century Modern design. The restaurant was designed by Philip Johnson and architect Mies van der Rohe, and opened in 1959.
This example of mid mod design uses the unique, simplified style to create emotion and tell a story. In 1997, leading architecture critic and educator Paul Goldberger said, “The Four Seasons emerged out of an entirely opposite view of modernism, the notion that modernism could, in fact, deal in emotion: it could seek to impress, even to awe…”
The Four Seasons’ evocative design created memorable dining experiences for nearly 60 years. With the advent of a new owner, the restaurant as moved to a new location. The new locations design is sleek and contemporary, with subtle nods to its mid century roots.
The Mercury – Atlanta, Georgia
Opening their doors in 2016, this 1950s space program-inspired restaurant combines Mid Century Modern sleek with touches of elegance. The openness of The Mercury’s floorplan— a whopping 4,400 sq ft—gives plenty of room to experiment with shapes and furniture arrangement. Due to the architectural-like design of the furnishings chosen, tables appear cohesive yet individual and diners able to feel a sense of depth and privacy even when seated alongside a neighboring table.
aestus – Santa Monica, California
This seasonal, New American-meets-vintage restaurant opened in early 2016, quickly making a name for itself thanks to its stunning decor. Housed in a distinctive art deco-style building, aestus is known for its retro-chic elements—like the long brass bar and spacious dining room, furnished with mid century-inspired pieces.
Viviane, Avalon Hotel – Beverly Hills, California
Sipping 1950-inspired cocktails while lounging on a combination of classic and custom mid mod furniture is our happy place, and available for any modernist in the Beverly Hills area. New restaurant Viviane houses eclectic groupings of furniture, featuring a 1950s Carlo de Carli settee alongside wood and brass dining chairs by American mid century designer Dan Johnson. Get something delicious while sitting on something historic!
