Pierre Koenig, the architect of Case Study Houses #21 and #22, also designed the Schwartz House in Santa Monica. The architecturally significant home is now for sale for $4,385,000.
Pierre Koenig (1925-2004) was a prolific architect as well as a Professor of Architecture at USC for 40 years. The Schwartz House (1994) was the last of Koenig’s projects that he saw completed in his lifetime, and so this stunning structure embodies his steel-and-glass style at its finest.
The Value of Architecture, where the home is listed, writes of the Schwartz House’s structure, “In a celebration of structural steel, the home is held aloft by four heroic columns, minimizing the impact on the site. The living space has then been rotated on axis thirty degrees, focusing on the southern exposure and capturing on-shore breezes to conserve energy.”
The home is an elegant expression of minimalism—the framing materials are also the finish. What you see serves both form and function. The walls of windows blur the boundary between inside and out.
