This year, Modernism Week’s Fall Preview will be go on–online.
“We are very excited about Modernism Week’s development of an online experience,” said J. Chris Mobley, Chief Executive Officer. “The online programs will allow viewers to participate remotely from home and to safely share the event experiences with their family and friends, adding the flavor and fun of a traditional Modernism Week Fall Preview.”
Modernism Week’s Fall Preview Line-Up
This year’s events include a virtual tour of MCM homes in Palm Springs and a documentary film about preserving the 1948, Paul R. Williams & A. Quincy Jones-designed Town & Country Center.
Here’s a rundown of events:
1) Home Tour Video Series | 70 minutes (5 segments) /$25
Modernism Week Board Member Maureen Erbe will be your tour guide through the interiors and exterior grounds of several architecturally significant Palm Springs homes.
2) Charles Phoenix’s Palm Springsland | 40 minutes/$35
Midcentury pop culture expert Charles Phoenix will take participants on a spirited video driving tour. Take in the mid mod architectural sights of Palm Springs from neighborhoods to civic buildings and more.
3) Fast Forward: Designing the Future of Palm Springs | 6 hours (3 segments) /$25
This symposium organized by the Palm Springs Architectural Alliance will include discussion around the needs and strategy for balancing current housing needs with concerns for preservation.
It is “part one of a two-part conference designed to present innovations around moderate income and homeless housing solutions, developing successful city design guidelines and panel discussions exploring conflicts among developers, designers, architects, city government officials and preservationists.”Part two of the discussion will be continued at Modernism Week in February 2021.
4) Mod with a Twist: Best of Twist 2020 | 50 minutes (5 segments) /$15
A line-up of five “cheeky modernists” will present ten-minute segments each, reprising favorites from last February’s event, on “fascinating, compelling and sometimes obscure aspects of midcentury modern life.”
5) Film: Preserving Modernism: The Town & Country Center | Run-time approximately 20 minutes /Free viewing
The documentary film tells the story of the Palm Springs Preservation Foundation’s efforts to save the 1948 Paul R. Williams & A. Quincy Jones Town & Country Center.
6) Film: The Restoration and Stabilization of the Cornelia White Residence | Run-time approximately 20 minutes /Free viewing
The Cornelia White Residence was built in 1893 of “recycled” railroad ties. Using time-lapse video, the film documents the “board-by-board” restoration of the one of Palm Spring’s oldest structures.
7) “Live from the Zoom Zoom Room” | October 16, 2020 at 6 p.m./ $5
Kellee McQuinn will welcome guests to the “Live from the Zoom Zoom Room” for a virtual cocktail hour.
It is promised to be “an entertainingly interactive affair, which includes a lively lesson in Modernism Mixology, a lightning round of Architecture Trivia, loads of lighthearted laughs, dancing, stories and surprises. DJ Baz will play non-stop swinging tunes from the midcentury era.”
