MCM Tree Decor: A Tutorial
Design the perfect MCM Christmas tree with this easy tutorial from Neil Bonner (above, right). (See his Palm Springs wonderland dressed for the holiday here.)
Supplies:
- 7-foot flocked pre-lit slim-line tree, extra full
- Three balls of 10-yard ribbon in sparkly blue, green, turquoise
- Small ball cluster bouquets (plastic), wired together
- Silver mylar garland
- Large ball ornaments (plastic)
Instructions:
- Starting at the top with one color of ribbon, arrange the ribbon in and out of the tree so it flows in a triangular shape. Go halfway down the tree and then change direction. Continue to arrange the ribbon around the tree in the opposite direction until you get to the bottom. Repeat with the other ribbons.
- With the large ball ornaments and starting at the top, stuff the balls evenly throughout the tree with the hanger positioned inward. Start at the top and then move to the bottom. Stand back and check placement. Then continue to the middle. Continue to check placement and rearrange until you’re satisfied.
- Next, place the ball bouquets into the tree in a similar manner, grouping them near the larger ornaments in color clusters.
- Work the mylar garland into the tree around the ribbons. The mylar reflects the light from the tree and adds shimmer and sparkle.
Pro tip: “Stuff ornaments into the tree like a bouquet,” Neil says. “For a clean look that creates color waves throughout the tree, do not hang the balls.”
