A new year brings new styles and trends! To stay ahead of the curve, take it from our three experts. Their predictions will help you freshen up your spaces and transition your home into 2022.
James Judge’s 2022 Design Trend Predictions
James Judge is a Phoenix-based designer, realtor, flipper, deal fanatic, and all-around house-a-holic. Thanks to his regular television appearances and magazine features, he has gained popularity and become a trusted source for all things interior design. Check out his thoughts on some of the upcoming design trends for 2022:
- I think we will be seeing a lot of earth tones being embraced and finding their way into fixtures and finishes. Taupe, grey, beige, and natural wood are all bringing a very organic element into current design trends, and most of the ‘Color of The Year’ by top brands for 2022 are in the green family.
- Brass and black are here to stay! Both finishes are still very in demand and work together beautifully.
- Flat panel cabinetry is also becoming much more mainstream, and not just with modern designs.
- When it comes to furniture and decor, 2022 is going to bring a much more eclectic style. People don’t want to wait 6-12 months for furniture to arrive. Therefore, thrifting and buying vintage goods are going to become more popular than ever. People are going to make the most of what they have and what they can find, so styles will be blending and blurring the lines of traditional and modern. What does all of this mean? I think styles are starting to transition!
Elin Walters’ 2022 Design Trend Predictions
Elin Walters is an interior designer, stylist, and the owner of Exactly Designs, which is based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Growing up in a creative family, Elin caught the design bug at an early age. Keep reading to find out the reasonings behind her 2022 design picks:
- Vintage, vintage, vintage in 2022! The younger generation seems to be more attuned to reusing and recycling. They are not afraid to shop at secondhand stores and put already used furniture in their living spaces.
- Home offices have become more common since the start of the pandemic. I see multi-functional spaces as a design trend in 2022, as we all are spending a lot more time at home and having to get more creative with how we use our rooms.
Christine Turknett’s 2022 Design Trend Predictions
Christine Turknett is the principal designer at Breathe Design Studio, a full-service residential and boutique commercial interior design firm based in Austin, Texas. Her goal is to create “interiors that tell stories of comfort and belonging.” Find out her take on the new trends for 2022:
- Shades of green—sage, mint, emerald, and forest—will be on cabinets and tile.
- Furniture and lighting will have more organic shapes that will be inspired by nature.
- Light wood, such as oak and pine, will be popular. Manufacturers are now offering oak as a standard finish in addition to walnut.
- Archway and curvatures will be a statement for both interiors and exteriors. Some versions of this include arch doorways, rounded millwork, and curved furniture. It particularly stands out in a modern space by softening up the clean lines you would normally expect to see.
- Bright and colorful appliances are in style, as many manufacturers are offering more custom colors and metallic finishes.
- Boucle—more commonly seen as a stock fabric—will be trendy. See options from Kardiel.com.
- Wellness spaces, especially meditation and yoga spaces, will be important, as more people are working from home. Work-life balance takes on a new meaning, so creating an at-home sanctuary can make a difference in someone’s well-being.
