If you’re looking for a Malm or freestanding conical fireplace (Malm wasn’t the only manufacturer), find some resources here. Once you have a Malm or other freestanding fireplace, what next?
In a previous article, we shared this advice.
- Clear the area. Keep a 4-foot clearance around your fireplace—this includes wood, kindling and furniture.
- Check for leaks. With a chimney system that involves multiple parts and connectors, it is important to check for damage, wear and loose connections. Repair immediately.
- Remove creosote. When tar, vapors and moisture combine, creosote is formed—which accumulates in the flue and can subsequently increase the heat of the next fire and risk a chimney fire. Use brushes, call a chimney sweep and add commercial cleaners to the fire to inhibit future buildup.
After use, if it is a woodburning model, be sure to clear out the ashes and store in a container with a tight-fitting lid. Routinely inspect the chimney and connectors for leaks.
If you bought yours used, then it may be helpful to track down the model and find if the installation and care instructions are posted online. Search the models here Don’t be afraid to call for help–you certainly don’t want a house fire on your hands! Search for fireplace and chimney technicians in your area who are familiar with the freestanding fireplaces. Sites such as handymanservice.com allow you to specify your need and location and let the relevant technicians find you.
