Professional organizer Amanda Burns Clark offers her tried-and-true advice on dealing with the decorations and simplifying holiday storage.
Keeping holiday decorations neat and tidy is often at the bottom of our to-do lists. If the idea of untangling your Christmas lights (again) is delaying your decorating, try these tips from professional organizer Amanda Burns Clark to simplify your holiday storage (and therefore your holiday decorating too).
Set a limit. Decide how much space you’re willing to dedicate to your items. Whether it’s bins or shelves, the goal is to keep only what you can fit in that space. Amanda stores all her decorations in similar bins, labeled by holiday. “When it’s time to pack everything back up, I’m not too specific. I want the freedom to use any bin I see fit,” she says.
Curate your collections. Be mindful of the space your decorations will take up in your home and in the storage bins. “I don’t have a lot of extra room, so if I’m adding a new decoration I will probably need to let go of something I already have. It’s worth my sanity to have a tidy garage—even if I need to make tough choices,”Amanda says.
Repurpose. Keep an eye out for decorations that can serve multiple purposes throughout the year, like table runners and vases. Decorations that work for different holidays can save both space and money. “I fill glass vases with rocks and black branches for Halloween and with glass ornaments for Christmas,” Amanda says.
