Palm Springs’ Mod Week and the MCM spots it highlights hold a special place in mid mod lovers’ hearts. While this year’s Mod Week is online, that doesn’t have to stop MCM fans from ogling over the architectural gems Palm Springs has to offer. As the Palm Springs Modernism Week events kick off, we’ve gathered up some of our favorite spots from Mod Weeks past.
Palm Springs’ Canyon Estates neighborhood.
Of course there are golf courses and pools, but what makes this neighborhood noteworthy is that architect Charles Du Bois designed 254 single-story, single-family homes, a central clubhouse, and 11 pools for this iconic Mid Century Modern neighborhood. Read more about the history and designs here.
The Saguro Hotel
With bright sunshiny yellow umbrellas around funky-shaped pools, The Saguro serves as a perfect venue for a pool party as in a previous Modernism Week.
The Aggregate Wall House
Included as part of the virtual Signature Tour in Fall 2020’s Modernism Week, this home is memorable for the rock for which it earns its name as well as its embodiment of late Modernism. Travel back in time to the 70s by reading more about the home here.
Desert Eichler
While the builder Joseph Eichler and the city of Palm Springs are both essential in the mid mod lexicon, never before did the two things combine until very recently. KUD Properties used Eichler plans for a new build home in Palm Springs, and Atomic Ranch and KUD Properties hosted a tour back in 2020. Read more here.
Green Gables
No, we’re not talking the red-headed Anne of Green Gables here but a 1958 Palmer and Krisel-designed high gable house in Palm Springs’ Twin Palms neighborhood. See more of H3K’s Green Gables and what makes it noteworthy.
